- "The desire to shelter the weak from danger is one that blossoms in all people eventually. And it seems it has now blossomed in you, son."
- —Daril, to Fidel
Relationship with Fidel
Fidel and Daril do not have a very strong relationship. Fidel's mother died when he was young due to a plague that struck Sthal, also killing the parents of Miki Sauvester. Daril trained Fidel in the ways of his swordsmanship, but did not praise Fidel often and always pushed him harder than he liked. Because of this, Fidel is more familiar with Daril's style of swordsmanship than anyone else.
When Fidel was just a young man, Daril left Sthal to deal with the war with Trei'kur. From this point on, Fidel was in charge of defending Sthal from bandits and ruffians as well as leading the Camuze School of Sworsmanship. Because of this, Fidel matured quickly and grew to resent his father. It is not until the rescue of Relia and speaking to Victor that Daril realizes Fidel is a capable man and swordsman.
Being the most renowned swordsman in Resulia has earned Daril a lot of fame, but also same animosity from enemy swordsman.
In particular, Trei'kurian military leader Der-Suul and Daril have an open rivalry to best each other. Der-suul often refers to Daril as "old man" to insult his age.
In each major battle during the war, Der-Suul directly tries to attack Daril with all of his might, but repeatedly is unable to defeat him, despite his best efforts.
Ambush of Trei'kurDuring a heartfelt conversation with Fidel, Eastern Trei'kur is ambushed by Der-Suul and his soldiers to retake the city. During the battle, Der-Suul target's Relia with a powerful signeturgical attack, but Daril tosses himself in front of Relia to absorb the blow. Daril survives, but is injured and captured, along with Relia, by the enemy.
Daril and Relia are taken to the Trei'kur Slaughtery and held prisoner until Fidel and his friends arrive. Victor travels with the group, despite this being against the orders of his supervisors. The party must then travel there and fight through Trei'kur's forces to find Daril and free him from the enemy's clutches.
Once the party reaches the summit of the Trei'kur Slaughtery, Daril is quickly freed by Miki, but immediately shouts that the setup is a trap. Der-Suul appears and surrounds the party. After the battle, Der-Suul orders his soldiers to fire at
Relia to kill her, but Daril again jumps over her to protect her. He is struck by the soldiers' phasers, and is mortally wounded. Unlike when Pavine attacked Miki, Emmerson and Anne do not have their ship and therefore can do nothing, even with their advanced technology, to help Daril. With his dying breath, Daril tells Fidel to continue to protect Relia. Fidel tries to apologize to his father for their poor relationship and for causing him to make this sacrifice, but Miki once again tells him that he should be thanking, not apologizing. After this event, Der-Suul immediately counterattacks Eastern Trei'kur to retake it from Resulia.
During the counterattack on Eastern Trei'kur, Der-Suul is defeated by Fidel. Finally, the Trei'kurian army is forced into retreat and the war is halted. Despite great losses on both sides, it seems peace may be possible. Although this is a great victory for Resulia as a whole, Fidel has lost his father.
Afterwards, Victor approaches Fidel and hands him a brilliantly decorated sword, the Insignivon, a sword often granted to the leader of Resulia's army, which had belonged to Daril. Fidel accepts the sword and vows to protect not only Relia and his friends, but all who need his aid. He will not let his father's death be in vain.
