Story[]

Background[]

Born in S.D. 753, she was orphaned as a baby under unknown circumstances. While she was still just an infant, she was taken to the Leingod Research Lab on Moonbase and was experimented on along with Fayt Leingod and Sophia Esteed. This genomorphic alteration was spearheaded by Dr. Robert Leingod in hopes of saving the galaxy from the Creator's punishment. Maria's genetics were encoded with symbols and given the power of Alteration, allowing her to modify the structure of matter itself.

Fearing a reprisal, Leingod's team disbanded. The Leingods and the Esteeds moved to Earth and took their children, Fayt and Sophia, with them. Maria was adopted by Jessie Traydor, who was a part of the staff at the Leingod Research Lab. They moved to Federation Station #17, where Jessie met and married Richard Traydor, a Federation officer. Together they raised Maria as their own daughter.

In S.D. 765, at age 12, this idyllic life came to end when the Aldian Empire attacked Federation Station #17. The assault caused a malfunction in the station's Creation Engine; her father Richard perished when the engine vaporised the base. Maria and her mother managed to escape on a transport ship, but it was too slow to evade a pursuing Aldian ship. Jessie told Maria that she was not her true mother but sacrificed her life in order for Maria to flee, against her will, in an escape pod. Maria eventually lost consciousness in her pod and was found by the Diplo, the flagship of the anti-Federation organization Quark.

Trajectory in Quark[]

Quark Leader

Maria.

Maria was brought aboard the ship. Quark's leader, Cliff Fittir, and his partner Mirage Koas, promised to protect her. Maria, having nowhere else to go, joined Quark and was apprenticed to the two Klausians who saved her life.

In S.D. 770, at age 17, Maria began searching information on her biological parents in Federation databases. Marietta discovered Maria's search and informed Cliff and Mirage. Even though he was intrigued by this search and why Maria didn't inform or ask him about it, Cliff decided to simply keep a watchful eye over Maria.

Later on, the Diplo received a distress signal to which they responded, but it was ambush by the Federation battleship Invisible, whose captain had decided to end Quark's existence. Maria suddenly had a crisis during the attack, speaking of her mother and collapsing while the ship was being gravely damaged by the Invisible. Despite their efforts, Cliff thought that everything was lost and that they were going to die. When he said the words "give up", Maria reacted to her mother's last words. Maria stood up and asked to fire a torpedo on the Invisible. Cliff, having nothing to lose, gave the orders to Mirage. Using the power of Alteration, the charged-up torpedoes tore through the Invisible's shields and destroyed the ship. Maria collapsed after this.

After this incident, Cliff willingly bequeathed to Maria the leadership of Quark, agreeing to work under her from then onwards. Using her position, Maria found some answers about herself and discovered the involvement of Dr. Leingod. Anxious to know why he had experimented on her (and his own son), Maria awaited an opportunity to meet him.

Search for Fayt[]

In S.D. 772, the Vendeeni attack on Hyda IV gives her the opportunity to hunt down the Leingods. She sends Cliff and Mirage out to retrieve Fayt on Vanguard III.

Maria personally lands on Elicoor II after Fayt unleashes the power of Destruction on a Vendeeni battleship. She aids the queen of Aquios in understanding the galactic politics she has been thrust into. She also explains the significance of out-of-place artifacts and that the Vendeeni are likely searching for the Orb of Apris. She later tells Fayt of her past, how her mother died and how she came to be leader of Quark.

Upon learning the truth of Dr. Leingod's plan at Moonbase, and that it was not to dominate the galaxy or use her as a Federation weapon, Maria used her power of Alteration to enable herself and the party to survive in Fourth-Dimensional Space, as Dr. Leingod had intended. She keeps a leading role alongside Fayt until the end of the game where they defeat the Creator of the universe, Luther Lansfeld. Even though he deleted the universe, the universe kept existing. It is speculated that her powers are the reasons of why the universe kept existing, her powers having altered the universe from an artificial one to a real one at the moment of the deletion.

Maria abandons her place of Quark's leader and dissolves Quark, thinking it is now unneeded (though it's hinted Cliff reestablished it some time afterwards). Following how Fayt acted during the game, she can have a discussion in the ending where she explains she'd now like to have a normal life.

It is hinted that she is a possible love interest for Fayt. She speaks of getting married and living somewhere peaceful afterwards, Fayt mentions that finding that person would be the hard part. In response, she tells him that she has a few prospects, one of which is Fayt, while another is usually thought to be Lieber, since in the ending without Fayt he possibly declares his love for Maria. It is unknown who the identity of any other prospects are.

Profile[]

I may not be a fighter by nature, but I never turn down a challenge.
― Maria

Maria is the voice of reason in most situations and tends to be rather blunt. She appears to be overconfident, but it may simply be a by-product of her calm approach to problems.

Her power is a source of inner conflict, thinking of herself as a "symbological weapon", and even more so after learning the reason behind it. While the power itself is meant for the greater good, Maria is bothered by the fact that her body was modified without her consent. She feels a connection to Fayt Leingod, as he was—as far as she knew—the only one who had undergone the same treatment.

Gameplay[]

Maria is a non-optional playable character in Star Ocean: Till the End of Time. In battle, she fights from a distance as her weapon of choice are guns, although she can also attack from a short range by kicking, having learned some of Mirage Koas' martial arts techniques, such as Triple Kick and Crescent Locus.

Maria is also a playable character in Star Ocean: Anamnesis. She got eight variants: "Maria", "Bride Maria" (both gun-using Sharpshooters), "Blossom Maria", "Summer Maria", "Bunny Maria", "Winter Maria", "Divine Maria" and "Vampire Maria".

Trivia[]

  • Maria originated as the feminine form of the Roman name Marius, but which became the Latinised form of the name of Miriam after Christianity spread across the Roman empire. Considering the other religious allusions in the game, Maria could very well be symbolic of the Mary honored by the Christian church.
  • While her surname is "Traitor" in the Japanese version, Maria is portrayed as an honest character, though it may refer to her turning against the Federation. Additionally, her powers were created in order to defy the creators.
