I shall destroy the entire world, and upon its ruins, I shall build a new world: Valhalla!
― Freya, before battle

Freya (フレイ, Frei?) is an optional enemy boss in Star Ocean: Till the End of Time, specifically the most powerful superboss in the game. To challenge Freya, the player must acquire the Angel Orb from the Ethereal Queen. The orb must be placed in the Urssa Lava Caves at Crosell's Lair where the large dragon once was to initiate the scene and fight.

Freya possesses the highest attack stat of any enemy in the game. While other superbosses have considerably more threatening moves, their damage can eventually be mitigated with endgame stats. Freya's meteoric offense ensures she remains a consistent threat, best demonstrated with the game's most powerful move: Ether Strike.

Strategy[]

Outrunning her Basic 2 beam is possible with a fast character like Fayt, or those adept at sidestepping. The most consistent method to avoid it is to stay extremely close to Freya, running around her as she fires—other than using stun bombs or certain battle skills.

Her Ether Strike doesn't cover the entire battlefield, but if a character is next to Freya when she casts it, it is impossible to outrun; it is recommended to stun or knock her out of the attack. Stone Rain can be easily outrun, and a side step after hearing Freya's voice can evade Lightning Strike. Her Fury seems to regenerates even while casting, allowing only major attacks to do reliable damage.

The player should make sure all their party members are at level 255 for the encounter. One can synthesize fully refined Boots of Prowess into all of the party's weapon factor slots, refine armor to duplicate their DEF %, and use the best available armor and ultimate weapons. This way, the player can effectively negate all of Freya's physical damage, making the characters invincible save for her symbology. It enables to focus on dealing damage, rather than trying to time when to throw EM Stun Bombs. A party of Fayt, Cliff, and Albel (the latter two should know Healing) is recommended. It is suggested to set Fayt to Manual (and continuously pummel Freya with Dimension Door at short range, and Ethereal Blast at long) and set Cliff and Albel to "Attack with all your might!". In any case, no matter the damage output, the fight will take a while due to Freya's high HP and MP.

Battle skills[]

  • Basic 1 - Weak attack (4% Fury; HP damage; average chance to knock down, low to stun; may Fury drain). Throws a ball of light in front of her, which erupts into several pillars that advance towards the target in a semi-linear fashion, lifting and juggling victims within multiple times.
  • Basic 2 - Strong attack (5% Fury; HP/MP damage; same chances as Basic 1; may paralyze). Faces a target and remains still while charging up with aura, but will swiftly turn to face her victim and unleash a rainbow beam of considerable length and width.
  • Basic 3 - Weak attack (5% Fury; HP/MP damage; average chance to knock down/back, low to stun; may confuse). Generates a multi-hit ring attack around herself almost instantly if a character is persistently too close to her.
  • Ether Strike (エーテルストライク?) - Strong attack. Jumps into the air, emitting a small aura, before planting an energy blast in the ground that lingers for a second before a near-instantaneous expansion to cover a wide area. It can hit a total of twenty times—twice during launch, six from the blast being planted, and twelve upon the expansion. Functionally similar to Lenneth's Nibelung Valesti, but Freya does not wait for an HP threshold and will use it throughout the entire fight.
  • Lightning Strike (サンダーストラック?) - Symbol. Wind-elemental.
  • Stone Rain (ロックレイン?) - Symbol. Earth-elemental.

Trivia[]

  • On Galaxy difficulty and below, Freya's damage can be completely nullified by Fayt alone through aggressive item synthesis. On Universe difficulty, a maximum-defense Fayt can achieve temporary immunity with a Protection spell. On 4D difficulty, Freya will always do damage.
