Its always so quiet whenever we're warping, isn't it? The view never changes, either. I suppose it makes sense, of course. The ship itself is still enclosed in its original normal space, after all.

A warp on Star Ocean: Anamnesis.

Warping (ワープ航行, Wāpu Kōkō?) is a method of interstellar travel used in the Star Ocean series which requires the vessel to have a functioning warp drive (ワープドライブ, Wāpu Doraibu?). There are two known types of warping, Subspace Warp and Gravitic Warp, which are the ones used by vessels from the Pangalactic Federation.

Warping was not invented by humans, as there were many space-faring species by the time humanity took to the star ocean—among them Energy Nede, Lezonia, En II and Eldar. The Subspace Warp method that was developed on Earth by Professor Trillas Bachtein came about through the secret contact with the Eldarian people, who provided the struggling Earth with pieces of their technology and the required exalithium ore. It was successfully tested in the "Warp Drive Experiment" of 2087 A.D. While utilizing subspace warp, the ship is wrapped in multiple layers of subspace and sent to the destined location.

This travel technology was in widespread use before the development of Gravitic Warp navigation, after which subspace warping began to be only used by small vessels with less powerful engines. The Gravitic theory was developed by Dr. Krupp in S.D. 537, and it enables to travel at speeds that greatly exceed those possible via subspace warping, but at the cost of a fair amount of turbulence when entering a warp.

Trivia[]

  • Warping is a spacecraft propulsion system in many science fiction works, most notably Star Trek (from which the Star Ocean draws direct inspiration) and I, Robot by Isaac Asimov. The general concept of "warp drive" was introduced by John W. Campbell in his 1931 novel Islands of Space.
