Maria Traydor (マリア・トレイター, Maria Toreitā) is one of the main characters of Star Ocean: Till the End of Time. She is an enigmatic young and beautiful human girl who is rumored to possess some very strange powers. Orphaned at a young age, she somehow became attached to Quark, an anti-Federation organization most active in the Klaus System, through those having saved her after her mother's death. Although she is an Earthling, her impeccable integrity led the anti-Federation organization Quark to make her their leader.

Now as its leader, she is using the group's resources to help her to discover the origin of her powers, leading her to the need to find Professor Robert Leingod and his family. This search forces her to send her friends and coworkers, Cliff Fittir and Mirage Koas, out to find Fayt Leingod. She is the voice of reason in most situations and tends to be rather blunt.

This search naturally leads her to send her friends and coworkers, Cliff and Mirage, out to find Fayt."
—Official Strategy Guide.

ChildhoodEdit

Maria was an orphaned baby born on Earth in 753 SD. She was taken while she was still just an infant to Moonbase and was experimented on along with Fayt Leingod and Sophia Esteed. This genetic alteration was intended be a part of Dr. Robert Leingod's plan to save the universe from the Creator's punishment. Maria's genetics were encoded with Symbols, something being normally forbidden to do on a human being, and in this way she was given the power of Alteration, allowing her to modify the structure of matter itself.

The power of Alteration's purpose is to allow Maria, as well as Fayt and Sophia, and ultimately any of their companions, to be able to exist inside the the Creator's Realm by altering matter. Due to its nature, Alteration presents capacity similar to Destruction, considering it can modify any weapon for its destructive effect be largely greater, even though Fayt's power of Destruction is described as higher than Maria's. Maria can also render any type of object indestructible if she wishes so. Nevertheless, none of these powers awoke during her childhood, and a great amount of training was needed in order for Maria to exert a very small percentage of Alteration's deepest secrets.

Maria was adopted by fellow scientist Jessie Traydor, who was working with the Dr. Leingod, and her husband Richard Traydor. Jessie had to make sure Maria would be good and would survive at all costs, her existence being fundamental to humanity's existence. They both raised her as their own children on Federation Station #17. This idyllic life went on until an Aldian attack caused a malfunction to the Creation Engine of the base, leading to its destruction. Maria and her mother escaped on a transport ship, but were too slow to evade the pursuing Aldian ship. Jessie sacrificed her life in order for Maria to flee, against her will, in an Escape pod.

QuarkEdit

Maria eventually lost consciousness in her Escape Pod, and was be found by the Diplo, the main ship of the anti-Federation organization Quark. There, she was be saved by its leader, Cliff Fittir, and his partner Mirage Koas, who promised to protect her. Maria, having nowhere else to go, joined Quark after becoming friends with Cliff and other Quarkians.

At 17 years old, Maria began searching Federation database information on her true parents, as Jessie, before her death, had told Maria that she was not her true mother. Marietta discovered Maria's search and informed Cliff and Mirage. Even though he was intrigued by this search and why Maria didn't inform or ask him about her efforts, Cliff decided to hide his hand and keep a watchful eye over an unknowing Maria.

Invisible's accidentEdit

Later on, the Diplo received a distress signal to which they responded, but it was in fact a fake and the ship came to be confronted by the Federation battleship Invisible, whose captain had decided to end Quark's existence. Maria had suddenly a crisis during the attack, speaking of her mother and collapsing while the ship was being gravely damaged by the Invisible. Cliff thought that everything was lost and that they were going to die after doing everything possible to win. Under the word 'give up" said by Cliff, Maria reacts to her mother last word saying she mustn't give up. Maria stood up and asked to fire a mere torpedo on the Invisible. Cliff, having nothing to lose, said to Mirage to obey.

Using her Alteration power, the charged-up torpedoes from the Diplo tore through the Invisible's shields and destroyed the ship. She collapsed after this. After this incident, she became the new leader of Quark, taking the post that was held by Cliff until now, but that he released willingly.

Search of the TruthEdit

After having found some answers to her question in using her new position, she decided to hunt down Dr. Leingod and find out the answer as to why he experimented on her and Fayt.

Maria is the one who sent Cliff and Mirage out to retrieve Fayt after the Vendeeni attack on Hyda IV. She feels a connection to Fayt as he was, as far as Maria knew, the only one who had undergone the same treatment; Sophia was also was experimented on, though Maria did not know this.

Fourth-Dimensional WarEdit

Maria lands on Elicoor II personally after Fayt unleashes his power of Destruction on the Vendeeni battleship, and aids the ruler of Aquios in understanding the galactic politics she'd just been thrust into. She also explains the significance of out-of-place artifacts (OPA) and that the Vendeeni were likely searching for the Orb of Apris. She later tells Fayt of her past, how her mother died and how she came to be leader of Quark.

Upon learning the truth of Dr. Leingod's plan at Moonbase, and that it was not to dominate the galaxy or use her as a Federation weapon, Maria used her power of Alteration to enable herself and the party to survive in 4-D space, as Dr. Leingod had intended. She keeps a leading role alongside Fayt until the end of the game where they defeat the Creator of the universe, Luther. Even though he deleted the universe, the universe kept existing. It is speculated that her powers are the reasons of why the universe kept existing, her powers having altered the universe from an artificial one to a real one at the moment of the deletion.

After the WarEdit

Maria abandons her place of Quark's leader and dissolves Quark, thinking it is now unneeded (though it's hinted Cliff refounded it few after). Following how Fayt acted during the game, she can have a discussion in the ending where she explains she'd now like to have a normal life.

It is hinted that she is a possible love interest for Fayt. She speaks of getting married and living somewhere peaceful afterwards, Fayt mentions that finding that person would be the hard part. In response, she tells him that she has two prospects, one of which is Fayt, while the other is "the one she didn't choose," which is usually thought to be Lieber, since in the ending without Fayt he declares his love for Maria.

In battle, she fights from a distance, her weapon being a gun, but also attacks at short range by kicking, having trained with Mirage and learned some of her martial arts techniques, such as "Triple Kick" and "Crescent Locus".

Additionally, her power of Alteration manifests as support Symbology that can improve other characters' strength, defense, and general abilities. She is considered one of the best characters in the game due to her large variety of attacks and the possibility of dealing lots of damage from long range, as well as short range if needed.

TriviaEdit

  • Despite that fact that her last name is transliterated as "Traitor" from the Japanese version, Maria is portrayed as an honest character, though the surname may refer to her turning against the Pangalactic Federation, in which she was born and by which she was used as a research subject in her childhood, to become the leader of Quark.
  • Maria is the Latin, Spanish and Italian version of the common given name Mary, which, considering the religious inspiration seen in the Japanese version of the game, Maria could be symbolic of one of the women named Mary honoured by the Christian Church. This name was also somewhat common in the English-speaking world in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, though it was traditionally pronounced as is the modern name 'Maraiah'.
  • Maria's second costume closely resembles Aya Brea from Parasite Eve.
  • Maria's third costume closely resembles Rinoa Heartilly from Final Fantasy VIII.
