Philia (フィリア) is the the daughter of Dr. Lantis and a supporting character in Star Ocean: The Second Story, its enhanced port, the Second Evolution and its remake, The Second Story R.

She does not affect the story in any particular way; however, by triggering certain Private Actions in specific places, the limiter on Gabriel can be turned off, thus making him stronger. In the story, she appears to have betrayed him. In fact, she herself is the limiter to Gabriel's true powers, and after the second Private Action with Philia, she dies, leaving Gabriel to be able to attack at full strength.

Story[]

Spoilers, plot and/or ending details follow. (skip)

Prior to the events of the game, the real Philia was killed during a terrorist act against the Operation Ten Wise Men, a project spearheaded by Dr. Lantis to defend Nede against underdeveloped planets that gained access to Nede's technology. The government hid this information from Lantis until the completed the project.

After learning of Philia's death, Lantis went mad with anger and grief, and reprogrammed the Ten Wise Men. He altered them to instead destroy the universe, which he now considered imperfect and decaying. Lantis made another artificial being, which he called Philia, in an attempt to resurrect his own daughter's consciousness, and also to use her as limiter on the power he would soon obtain.

In order to safekeep the limiter, Lantis programmed the artificial Philia in a way so she can't kill herself.

How to disable Gabriel's Limiter[]

Kurik's Destruction[]

To find Philia the first time, the player must trigger a Private Action in Kurik before talking to the ship captain the second time (before he tells the player to wait for a while more). This is imperative as once Kurik is destroyed, the player will no longer able to trigger to meet Philia anymore.

While in the Private Action, the player must walk to the Fountain Square, where they'll find Philia warning the residents of Kurik to evacuate, as a great storm of destruction is on its way towards the town. However, the residents ignore Philia. The player can also pickpocket Philia for a Sprite's Bracelet.

Centropolis[]

In order to meet Philia again, the player must save on the final save point at Phynal, right before meeting Gabriel (which will make the save data graphic visually distinct). By going all the way back and returning to Centropolis, the player can trigger a Private Action there, and find Philia in the Mayor's Hall. She'll beg the player character to kill her before her father swallows her existence. Before the protagonist can say or do anything, Philia will disappear, being absorbed by Gabriel. She'll drop the accessory Tear of Israfel on the ground after vanishing.

Finishing this Private Action will remove Gabriel's Limiter; he will now have 1,500,000 HP and 20,000 MP.
