Chart of the Milky Way's sectors circa S.D. 772.

The Milky Way (天の川, Amanogawa?) is a galaxy, a large system of stars held together by mutual gravitation and isolated by vast regions of space, in the universe and where the Star Ocean series takes place. It is divided in multiple sectors. As of S.D. 720, almost half of the Milky Way is under possession of the Pangalactic Federation, while the rest is either unexplored or under possession of the Aldian Empire or Vendeeni forces.

In S.D. 772, the breakthroughs in the field of space-time symbology by its inhabitants make the Milky Way the target of a purge by the Sphere corporation, which believes the galaxy to be corrupted.

Sectors[]

The galaxy has been divided by its inhabitants into equally-sized sectors, interlocking partitions defined in order to specify the general galactic location of a star or any other object. Each sector is shaped like a perfect hexagon when viewed from the bottom, and extends up into a hexagon-shaped pillar. All but the central sector were assigned Greek alphabet letters in order following a spiral pattern.

There are 25 sectors but, as the central area of the galaxy is much thicker than the edges, seven sectors—from Zero to Zeta—are also divided vertically. In this case, the sectors above and below a 'central' sector have either a + (plus) or a - (minus) affixed to the end, and are thus differentiated them into upper, central, and lower sub-sectors. If these sectors are also included, the Milky Way is divided into a total of 39 sectors.

  • Zero Sector - Also called Sector 0, it comprises the center of the galaxy. The sector's central point lies along a straight line that connects to the point at the center of the universe, or the point from which all galaxies are expanding.
  • Alpha Sector - It lies along a straight line that passes from the origin points in the galactic and universal spatial coordinate systems, and is used as a standard of reference for delineating all sectors. It contains the Elicoor System (whose second planet is inhabited) and Federation Stations #8, #9 and #20. Aster IV is located on the edge of the Alpha Sector.
  • Beta Sector - Notable for housing Styx, declared a prohibited zone by the Federation, and Vanguard Sytem. On the border with Eta Sector lies the Faykreed System and the Alcazar of the Golden Age on an asteroid nearby.
  • Gamma Sector - It contains the Vendeeni System, whose inhabitants are the most scientifically advanced civilization in the galaxy by S.D. 772, in addition to many neutral powers that use the Vendeeni as a shield. The systems maintain their independence because the area is far away from the Federation's center of government and because it is near the border with the Aldian Empire. It also contains Fargett, Ise, and Lezonia.
  • Zeta Sector - A neutral area that houses the Klaus System (of which its third and fourth planets are the birthplace of the anti-Federation organization Quark) as well as the Rezerb System.
  • Eta Sector - It includes Tetragenesis and Remote Stations #3 and #4.
  • Theta Sector - It is the center of the Pangalactic Federation, physically, politically, and also historically. It includes the Sol System (where the Earth is located), to which Roak is relatively close, and the Arcura System (Expel), which the overdeveloped planet of Energy Nede crossed every 7000 years before its destruction. Milokeenia and Edifice are located in this sector, as are many important Federation facilities like Remote Stations #1 and #2.
  • Kappa Sector - Approximately 40% of it is under the control of the Federation and it includes both the Hyda System (Hyda IV) and Remote Station #7.
  • Lambda Sector - It is the Federation-controlled sector closest to the territory of the Aldian Empire. As a border zone, it has been plagued by armed conflict between the two galactic powers. It contains the Estoch System, where the mining planet Arakh is located, as well as Federation Station #17 until S.D. 765. On the borderline with the Gamma sector is Remote Station #6.
  • The Nu, Xi, Omicron, and Psi Sectors, along with three other adjacent sectors, are controlled by the Aldian Empire, which colonized the sectors' many star systems by force.
  • Upsilon Sector - The mysterious astronomical body known as the Missing Procedure appeared there circa S.D. 10, which heralded the coming of the Grigori.
  • The Tau, Phi, Chi, and Omega Sectors are on the periphery along with Sectors Psi and Upsilon, right on the edges of the galaxy.
