Wouldn't want you to act like you're king of the world just because you beat up on the ventriloquist dummies!
― Zaphkiel

Zaphkiel (ザフィケル, Zafukieru?), known as Marsilio in the original English translation, is one of the Ten Wise Men, the close range weapon of the group, the first Wise Man to be created and a major antagonist in Star Ocean: The Second Story, its enhanced port Second Evolution and remake The Second Story R.

Story[]

Spoilers, plot and/or ending details follow. (skip)

Zaphkiel is first met at the top of Eluria Tower along with the other Wise Men, but does not engage the party at that point.

Zaphkiel is only seen later on the first assault of the Nedian forces on Phynal, where he easily defeats them in battle. Seeing that there is no other solution, Mariana distracts Zaphkiel, sacrificing herself so that Claude, Rena, their friends and Nall may escape the fortress.

Later, Metatron, Jophiel and Zaphkiel attack the party in Fun City. While his comrades wreak havoc in the amusement park, Zaphkiel engages the party again, as their first encounter was interrupted. He is then killed by them and their new antimatter weapons.

Battle[]

In battle.

Zaphkiel is fought twice during the storyline, the first being an unwinnable battle. He is pretty average among the Wise Men, and his battle is pretty simple and straightforward. He isn't very fast and is very easy to stunlock. His Initial Slay move can inflict paralysis, but it seldom happens. If the player keep him stunlocked, no matter what difficulty mode he will fall easily and fast.

Trivia[]

  • In the PSX version, Zaphkiel knows Eruption and Growth, but the creators programmed him with 15 MP so these spells were never seen nor attempted use. In the PSP remake, Zaphkiel doesn't know any spells whatsoever but keeps his 15 MP.
  • In the English translation of the PSX version, his name is changed to Marsillio. This likely comes from Marsilio Ficino, an Italian scholar and Catholic priest who was one of the most influential humanist philosophers of the early Italian Renaissance.
